Harrisville City America 250 Celebration
In commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, we are excited to invite all of you to the biggest block party in Harrisville starting the evening of Friday, July 31st and going through August 1st. This city-wide celebration has been specially designed with a theme – Thank a hero, be a hero. We owe every freedom that we enjoy as citizens of this great city to heroes past, heroes present, and those who will yet be heroes in our country and community. It is with this thought in mind that has driven the planning of this wonderful event. Below are some of the details of what you can expect over those two exciting days!
July 31st ~ Movie in the Park (dusk)
What better way to start a weekend of celebration than with a movie in the park. We will be showing “National Treasure” and we invite you to pull up a chair or a blanket and come join us near the bowery for an evening of fun and laughter.
August 1st
Morning of Service ~ Thank a Hero, be a hero
We know that a community that serves together is united and strong, and that is what makes Harrisville so special and unique. We have created service opportunities that morning that can be done by both old and young alike. Some of the activities of service will include:
- Setting up an honor field ~ We will line the walking path around the retention pond in the park with American flags to honor all of those veteran heroes that have served or are serving from our community.
- Writing letters to military members and their families ~ We will have supplies where you can write thank you letters to those who are serving our country right now and their families. These letters will be collected and distributed by our local national guard representatives.
- Food Drive ~ We encourage people to walk the honor field and the only cost of admission is to bring a non-perishable food item (or 2 or 3) that can be donated to the Tri-city exchange. Of course, you can walk without donating a non-perishable food item, but we hope that as you walk the honor field to thank a hero, you will step up to be a hero to someone else in our community who is in need.
- Park Clean up ~ We will also have the opportunity to help spread some wood chips in the park and to do some simple trash pick up to show pride in our community and to give back to those individuals who serve us every day as local heroes.
There will also be a limited supply of Harrisville American Celebration T-shirts that will be given out to those who come and help serve that morning. The schedule for the morning of service will be as follows:
- 8:00 – 9:00 am ~ Check-in and honor field flag set up
- 9:00 – 9:30 am ~ Flag ceremony presented by the VFW (you won’t want to miss this)
- 9:30 – 11:00 am ~ Service in the park – Writing letters, Food drive, and park clean up
